Life at Gurukul

I am fortunate and blessed to have Sutapa Mam as my Guru. She is an epitome of grace and beauty. She has always encouraged us to try again when there is failure and helped to become confident and successful person in life. We shall be forever indebted to her for her contributions in our lives. No words is enough to describe Mam.

Gurukul is more than an institution. It is more like another home for all of us. Gurukul has given me much new experiences in my life.

GURUKUL has a been my second home since I was only 4 years old. And through all these years the bond has only got stronger. It’s the place where I get to pursue my passion. It is not only a place where we get to learn dance, but it has turned out to be a haven which imparts peace, joy & of course knowledge to all our dance loving souls.

My guru, Smt. Sutapa Talukdar is one of a kind whose love and diligence towards Odissi Dance is unsurpassable. She is the person who induced in me the love for dance. Regardless of her innate talent, she finds the best way to encourage each pupil in every sphere of life. Either by scolding or by adoring she always brings out the best in us. For us (her disciples) she is the epitome of beauty and knowledge and the absolute incarnation of Goddess Saraswati.

A Guru is a guide who leads his/her disciples from darkness (gu) to light(ru). I am fortunate to have Guru Smt. Sutapa Talukdar as my Nritya Guru who is enlightening me continuously with her vast knowledge of Odissi Dance. Every day she used to teach us how to enhance Bhāva, Vībhāva and Anūbhāva perfectly through our major and minor limbs so that the ultimate essence of the presentation(Rasanīspattī) can be felt by the Rasīkas who are present there to watch our performance. She is nurturing us, nourishing us with great care, love and patience so that we can grow up and leave our marks in this field of dance. I'm indeed blessed to have her as my Guru.

Gurukul is the premier institution of Odissi dance in Kolkata lead by Guru Smt Sutapa Talukdar for last 32years. I have been learning Odissi under her tutelage since last nine years. For me, Gurukul means Dance, Discipline and Dedication. I am really happy to be a student of this institution where Odissi dance is taught with its proper technique following the legacy of Guru Padmavibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra.

My Guru Smt. Sutapa Talukdar is one of the finest artists I have ever witnessed. Her knowledge about the intricacies truly amaze me. I have been training in her institution for the last 12 years.
