“All artists may not desire or be able to create new choreographies. Some may be good performers, others -teachers, while still others – solo dancers – those whom the audience want. It is by the blessings of Goddess Saraswati and Guruji that I have become accomplished in all these three aspects. I had a strong desire to stage “Abhigyanashakuntalam” in 1992. By nature, I am a very romantic person. The love between Dushyanta and Shakuntala haunted me. But where did I have the capability to create an expression of this? At my request, Guruji, along with 45 artists choreographed a dance drama on this love story – the first and so far, the best choreography of Gurukul . The music was composed by V.Balsara, choreography -by Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra, and light by Tapas Sen. That was my first production under Guruji’s guidance. Thereafter, I have choreographed and performed numerous themes, and still continuing to do so even today.”
The Creative Wing - True to its name, this section is an embodiment and reflection of the most experimental works of Sutapa Talukdar and Gurukul. The danseuse, as is evident from her choreographies, is a staunch believer of retaining the classic in its true from. The Creative wing is a unique amalgamation of the classic and the novel. The Wing employs research-based practice due to which there is an accumulated repository of vast archival assets and invaluable references of Indian classical music and dance. The choreographies created in this wing are unique presentations of the Odissi dance form bearing the signature of Sutapa’s novelty. However, these presentations retain the signature mellifluous, amorous and dreamy attributes of her Guru’s style.
At the heart of all Creative Wing conceptions lies innovation. Use of colourful and inventive sets and seamless blend of various indigenous classical dance forms like Kalaripayattu and Chhau with Odissi, make the formations exceptional, both visually and aesthetically. Music plays a vital function in all of Creative Wing productions. SutapaTalukdar has a penchant for authentic, quality musical support. This has led to an enviable repository of music composed only by the best in the space - V. Balsara, Pt.Jayanta Bose, Pt.Shubhankar Banerjee, Pt.BhubaneswarMisra, Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar and PrafullaKar to name a few. Perhaps the crowning glory to this assemblage is the treasure trove of Pakhwaj music, played by Guru KelucharanMohapatra himself!
The Creative Wing manifests in three forms –
Dance Drama –
Story-telling through nritya, the drama unfolds in the form of a narrative chronicled through mudras.
Dance Ballet –
A blend of Odissi with other indigenous classical dance forms, the ballet is a representation of an idea through vibrancy.
Dance Items –
A short exposition, engaging and mesmerising, enhanced with lyrics and music.
